Does Smelling Good Make you More Attractive?

Most people (probably like you) wouldn't leave the house without putting on at least something… whether that be deodorant or perfume itself.

In fact, our preferences for different scents can reveal a lot about us.

A recent study explored the psychology behind these different scents - does what we put on ourselves actually affect how attractive we are?

Is there more to it than just putting on some deodorant?

The results were shocking, and have put some scientific truth behind "Thinking it is half the battle."

See the Data Here

The Studies:

The data discussed below is from three studies focusing on how perfumes affect the perception of body odor in terms of attractiveness, pleasantness, and intensity.

In studies one and two, groups of participants were told to leave one armpit bare (control) and fill the other armpit with perfume.

They were then rated on their smell attractiveness, pleasantness, and intensity.

In study three, separate groups of participants were given perfumes while others were allowed to bring their favorite.

Again, they were then rated on their smell attractiveness, pleasantness, and intensity.

Study One and Two

In studies one and two, the numbers almost jumped off the page; people who wore perfume were considered significantly more attractive and pleasant than those who were not wearing any.

While this is interesting - it really isn't a shock to anyone.

Most people probably assume that those who wore perfume would smell better (or you wouldn't have bought it).

Study Three (Things Get Interesting):

Study three is where things start to get interesting.

Instead of comparing a participant with no fragrance to one with fragrance, they compared participants who were assigned fragrance to those who could choose their own fragrance.

They found that people who could choose their fragrance were significantly more attractive than those who were assigned a fragrance.

Now, were the raters just bad at picking perfume?

Nope.

What was going on here was the psychology behind feeling and smelling good.

The study above proves that thinking you smell better, on some biological level, actually influences how the opposite sex perceives our smell as more pleasant, attractive, and intense.
